I don’t think I have ever come across a woman who has never been on a diet, or thought about going on a diet.
We see images of beautiful women all around us and think, “If I just ate a little better/exercised a little more/insert other… then I could have a better figure”.
But it doesn’t happen, and we end up feeling like failures, doomed to stay just as we are.
Sometimes we embark on diet programs, but they don’t last.
For some of us, our diet intentions might not make it to the next week, or even the next day.
Others make good progress, lose weight, and look fantastic. But despite this, statistics show that after 5 years, most have put the weight back on, and 40% of those people end up weighing even more.
So what is the answer?
Check out this great talk from Sandra Aamodt, a neuroscientist, who shares her own personal story about what happened when she decided her New Year’s resolution was to give up dieting and stop worrying about her weight. [Spoiler alert: she lost weight].
She goes on to explain why diets usually don’t work.
After you’ve watched it, consider this: would tonight be a good time to sit down at the dinner table with the kids (if they’re old enough) to discuss the topic of dieting?
According to Sandra’s talk, around 80% of 10 year old girls have tried to diet. That’s a pretty sobering statistic, and it’s depressing to think that 8 out of 10 preteen girls don’t like their bodies, or don’t think they are good enough, just as they are.
Imagine the advantage our children could have, if they were to grow up with this insight into dieting and why diets simply don’t work.
Imagine how they would feel about themselves if they knew this.
Enjoy these amazing and possibly life changing words of wisdom.
