The definitive list of 2017’s most popular baby names has been released by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages.
It features the top 100 baby names for babies born in New South Wales in 2017, and ranks baby names in order of popularity.

Unsurprisingly, the Royal Family’s choices have continued to influence the trend for baby names. Charlotte took first place on the girls’ list. William came in second on the boys’ list for the fourth year running. Harry and George both secured places in the top 30.
Louis, the name of the newest prince, only made it to number 70, although it is likely to make a comeback this year, as parents continue to look to Royal babies’ names for inspiration.
The name Henry made it into the top 10, replacing Leo, which was pushed down to number 13. Zoe and Ella were in the top 10 for girls, replacing Emily and Ruby.
The most popular name for boys in 2017 was Oliver, which was chosen for 556 babies born in New South Wales in 2017. Topping the girls’ list, Charlotte was the name chosen for 482 babies.
Choosing a name for your baby is a big responsibility, and it’s a decision many expectant parents feel nervous about making. In most cases, the name stays with your child for a lifetime, so it’s important to choose one you and your child will be happy with.
Some parents experience name regret – either for choosing a name they weren’t all that crazy about, or for not choosing the name they really wanted.
Parents in NSW have 60 days to register their child’s birth, so there’s plenty of time to decide on the perfect name. If you’re struggling for ideas, take a look in a baby name book to see if any names jump out at you.
You could also look for inspiration closer to home. Some couples choose to use family names, for sentimental reasons. You could also think of people who have inspired you – activists, writers, even fictional characters – as you go in search of a name both you and your partner love.
