Homemade Apple Crumble | An Old-Fashioned Favourite

Apple crumble, a family favourite dessert in many households, has a rich history dating back to Britain. During World War II, the dish became popular due to rationing, as it was a cost-effective alternative to more elaborate pies. The simplicity of the crumble topping, made from flour, sugar, and butter, provided a quick and satisfying way to use up surplus apples. Over time, this dessert has become a staple in homes across the world, cherished for its warm, comforting flavours and easy preparation.

From a flavour perspective, apple crumble offers a balance of sweetness and essential nutrients. Apples, the star ingredient, are high in dietary fibre and vitamin C, supporting digestive health and boosting immunity. While the crumble topping adds a delightful crunch, it’s also rich in carbohydrates, providing a quick energy source. For those looking to make a healthier version, options like wholemeal flour and reduced sugar can be used without sacrificing taste.

Apple Crumble Tips

  • Choose the right apples: Use a mix of tart and sweet apples, like Granny Smith and Pink Lady, Red Delicious for a balanced flavour.
  • Keep the peel on: For added fibre and a rustic texture, leave the apple peels on when slicing.
  • Add spices: Enhance the crumble with a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm, aromatic touch.
  • Use cold butter: Ensure the butter is cold when mixing the crumble topping to achieve a perfectly crumbly texture.
  • Let it rest: After baking, allow the crumble to rest for a few minutes to set and develop richer flavours.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 150g plain flour
  • 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 50g brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Vanilla ice cream or custard, to serve

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).
  2. Place the sliced apples in a baking dish and drizzle with lemon juice. Sprinkle with half the caster sugar and cinnamon, if using.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and remaining sugars.
  4. Add the cold butter cubes and rub together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  5. Evenly spread the crumble mixture over the apples in the baking dish, ensuring they are fully covered.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a generous pour of custard and cream.
