Society expects mamas to be grateful, thankful and happy with their lot.
We are meant to love being mamas so much that little else matters.
And whilst we do, of course, love being mamas, that doesn’t mean everything is rose-tinted.
There’s nothing wrong with admitting that motherhood isn’t all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows.
Saying you hate having baby poop under your fingernails or are struggling on the thirty-seven seconds of sleep you’ve managed over the past three nights, does not make you a bad mother. It just makes you a mother.
There’s nothing wrong with being honest about the motherhood experience. After all, it’s not all good and not all bad. One minute you’re having a total crisis as a poo explosion hits your baby’s nappy, and the next your heart is melting as your baby boy looks up and smiles at you. One minute you’re feeling joy like no other, holding your baby above you in the air as she giggles, and the next you’re spitting her vomit out of your foolishly open mouth.
Motherhood is all about the ups and downs, and there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging those pesky downs every once in a while.
If Mamas Were Really Honest On Thanksgiving
Comedy trio The Breakwomb have created a seasonal video showcasing what it would be like if mamas were really honest about what they were thankful for this year. The hilarious mamas start off detailing the cliché answers you might see on a typical advert featuring wholesome mothers, but quickly move onto the real answers.
One mama explains she’s thankful because her “son still takes two naps; most kids his age are down to one. Good boy.”
Another mama ends up admitting she’s thankful for her wine. Panic sets in as the mamas realise they’re going to have to come up with more things to be thankful for. After a desperate search around her, one mama holds up her fruitful and halfheartedly explains she’s thankful for “the bounty of fruit”.
One of the mamas finishes by thanking a friend for watching her kid she that she can go and do some shopping.
The things we’re thankful for may not always be the most inspiring, the most wholesome or the most motherly, even. And that’s fine, mamas are human too.
