    now its 8 o'clock

    Little Jack

He wore a pair of tattered pants
    A ragged roustabout
And through the torn crown of his cap
A lock of hair stuck out
His home was in a friendless street
    His name was Little Jack

One day a bouncing baby boy
    With head of curly hair
    Escaped his mothers loving arms
    Who, tired with other cares
    Forgot her little baby one
Who crept upon the railway track
To play with the bright pebbles there

But see! Around the bend there comes
    A swiftly flying train
It rattles and it whistles and it shreiks with might and main
    But who's this little figure?
    Running down the track...
    His hat is gone
    His feet are bare
    Its ragged Little Jack

He picked the child up in his arms
And from the tracks the babe was safely tossed
But a slip, and a cry, the train rolled by
    Poor Little Jack is gone

They found his mangled body there
Just where he slipped and fell
    And brave men wept
Who'd never cared for him, when he was well
If there be starry crowns in Heaven

I'm struggling to remember any lullabies... Twinkle Twinkle little star is the only one I can think off the top of my head... are there any others that will help my little boy rock off to sleep. I like "Hush little baby"... but I don't think I'll remember all the words...

once i caught a fish alive
    6 7 8 9 10
then i let it go again
"why did u let it go"
"because it bit my finger so"
    "which finger did it bite?"
"this little finger on my right"

    Open, shut them
    Open, shut them
    Open, shut them
    give a little clap!
    Open, shut them
    Open, shut them
    lay them in your lap.
    Creep them, creep them
    Creep them, creep them
    right up to your chin.
    Open wide your little mouth....
....but do not let them in!
    Shake them, shake them
    Shake them, shake them
    Shake them just like this.
    Roll them, roll them
    Roll them, roll them
Blow a little kiss - mwa!!!

Before i put dd to bed - each time i say:

It's time for bed now close your eyes
No more tears and no more sighs
Dream of all things happy and bright
Stay warm and snug until it's light.

And I love the monkeys one - and what you say to your DD. I think I'll have to borrow that one from you!

There are a couple of others I like:

    See saw, Marjorie Dawe
Johnny shall have a new master
He shall earn just a penny a day
Because he can't work any faster

    ---

Sing a song of sixpence, a pocket full of rye
Four-and-twenty blackbirds baked in a pie
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing
Wasn't that a dainty dish to set before a king?

The king was in the counting house, counting out his money
The queen was in the parlour, eating bread and honey
The maid was in the garden, hanging out the clothes
When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose.

    ---

The Wise Man built his house upon the rock
The Wise Man built his house upon the rock
The Wise Man built his house upon the rock
And the rain came tumbling down.

The rain came down and the floods came up
The rain came down and the floods came up
The rain came down and the floods came up
And the house upon the rock stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the rain came tumbling down.

The rain came down and the floods came up
The rain came down and the floods came up
The rain came down and the floods came up
And the house upon the sand fell flat!

    ---

The Owl and The Pussycat went to sea
    On a beautiful pea-green boat
They took some honey and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five-pound note
The owl looked up to the stars above
And sang to a small guitar
"O lovely pussy, o pussy my love, what a beautiful pussy you are, you are, what a beautiful pussy you are."

Pussy said to the owl: "You elegant fowl
    How charmingly sweet you sing.
O let us be married, too long we have tarried
But what shall we do for a ring?"
So they sailed away for a year and a day
To the land where the bong-tree grows
And there in the wood a piggy-wig stood
With a ring at hte end of his nose, his nose, with a ring at the end of his nose.

"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the piggy: "I will."
So they took it away and were married next day
By the turkey that lives on the hill.
They dined on mince and slices of quince
Which they ate with a runcible spoon
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand
They danced by the light of the moon, the moon, they danced by the light of the moon.

(Sadly you can't sing Col. Fazackerly unless you do it to the tune of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and that's just not that appropriate.)

    I've always liked these ones:

    Little Miss Muffet

Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet,
    Eating her curds and whey;
There came a big spider, who sat down besides her
    And frightened Miss Muffet away.

    The Mulberry Bush

Here we go round the mulberry bush,
the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush,
here we go round the mulberry bush,
    so early in the morning!

This is the way we wash our face,
wash our face, wash our face,
this is the way we wash our face,
    so early in the morning!

This is the way we comb our hair,
comb our hair, comb our hair,
this is the way we comb our hair,
    so early in the morning!

This is the way we brush our teeth,
brush our teeth, brush our teeth,
this is the way we brush our teeth,
    so early in the morning!

    Hickory ****ory Dock
    Hickory ****ory Dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck 1 - 'dong'
    The mouse ran down
    Hickory ****ory Dock

    Drip, Drop
    Drip, Drop, Drip, Drop
    The rain is falling down
    Drip, Drop, Drip, Drop
    Splashing all around
    Lets put on our gumboots
    our raincoat and our hat
And jump in all the puddles
    With a SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH!

    Dingle Dangle Scarecow
When all the cows are sleeping
And the sun has gone to bed...
    UP jumps the scarecrow
And this is what he says...
    "I'm a Dingle Dangle Scarecow
    With a flippy, floppy hat
I can shake my hands like this
And shake my feet like that!"

    Rainbow Song
    Red and Yellow
    And Pink and Green
    Purple and Orange and Blue
    I can sing a rainbow
    Sing a rainbow
    Sing a rainbow too.

    Hammer, Hammer, Hammer
Hammer, Hammer, Hammer (bang fists together)
    Shake, shake, shake (shake hands)
    Clap, clap, clap (clap hands)
    And roll.... (roll hands)

Gee the Five Little Ducks song brings back memories, i sang that to DD when she was going under anaesthetic. I dont sing it anymore...

    One song i did sing that calmed her straight away was the Rabbit Song. Do you remember the ad for wine. Theres no hand actions but the song goes;

    'On the farm,
    every friday,
on the farm, its rabbit pie day,
so every friday that ever comes along,
i get up early and sing this little song,

run rabbit, run rabbit, run run run,
dont give the farmer his fun fun fun,

he'll get by, without his rabbit pie if you run rabbit run rabbit run run run.

    Lol.

DS will only settle to this Hi-5 song:

    Spidy spidy spider,
    weave your web wider,
criss cross up and all around,
    web weaving spidy, spider.

Not really nursery rhymes but they settle my kids .

Oh speaking of rabbit songs that reminded me :

    In a Cottage
    In a cottage
    In the woods
    A little man
    By the window stood
    Saw a rabbit hopping by
    Knocking at the door
    "Help me, help me,
    Help me" it said
(Before the hunter shoots me dead) - i change to -"Before the hunter catches me" - lol - i know it doesn't rhyme but it's better than the original
    "Come little rabbit
    Stay with me
    Happy we shall be"

LMAO !, never payed that much attention to the ad. Just noticed DD would stop what she was doing to watch it. Apparently mum used to sing it to us kids when we were little to. Thats freaky.

    Here are some more -

    Hush Little Baby
Hush little baby, don't say a word
Mama's going to buy you a mocking bird
And if that mocking bird wont sing
Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring turns brass
Mama's going to buy you a looking glass
And if that looking glass gets broke
Mama's going to buy you a billy goat
And if that billy goat runs away
Mama's going to buy you another one today...
    (repeat ad nauseam)

    Little Animal Song

See the little rabbit sleeping 'til it's nearly noon
Come and let us wake him/her gently with a happy tune
    Look, how still
    Is he/she ill?
    Wake up now
    Hop little rabbit, hop,hop,hop,hop
Hop little rabbit, hop, hop, hop

this song can be sung until you exhaust supplies of animals and movements!!

    Grand Old Duke of York
(lift baby up high on UP words and down low on DOWN)

Oh the Grand Old Duke of York,
    He had ten thousand men,
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up they were up,
And when they were down they were down,
And when they were only half way up
They were neither up nor down.

Lately Logan seems to love it when I sing this to him.. it sends him straight to sleep. Funnily enough my mother told me I used to also like this lullaby when I was a baby

    All the pretty little horses
    Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
    Go to sleepy little baby.
When you wake, you shall have
    All the pretty little horses.
Blacks and bays, dapples and greys,
    Coach and six little horses.
    Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
    Go to sleepy little baby.

DD would love any rhyme at all, especially if it had actions, like I'm a little teapot. She was into Hi-5 and learning all the moves which I would have to do with her as well.

Here is one of my personal favourites. If DD is cranky with me, I sing this and she says "I know you trying to make me happy and smile" Only takes a minute or two and she starts singing it with me. Problem is, I can't stop thinking of the song for the rest of they day LOL!!

I just copied this from the abc kids website, I think the words were a little bit different when DD was little?

If all the world were paper

If all the world were paper,
What a strange world it would be
With paper clouds and paper sun and paper bird in paper tree
    Hey hey hey!
You'd stand and stare if there was nothing but paper everywhere
    Hey hey hey!

What would you do if everything was paper and so were you.

How would the paper houses stand
When the wind begins to blow?
How would you drive a paper car
and how would paper flowers grow?
    Hey hey hey!
You'd stand and stare if there was nothing but paper everywhere
    Hey hey hey!

What would you do if everything was paper and so were you.

    Nic
